History of the Cross in America

I am not going into the complete history of the cross here. I am going to go into when the cross was first used as a symbol in America to dispel the “myth” that America was not founded on Christian principles.

I will be using information taken from my 9th Great Grandfathers (Captain James Davis/Davies, Master of the “Mary & John”) diary, written in 1607/10, detailing one of the first expeditions to America. Captain John Smith who wrote about the Sagadahoc colony indicated that Captain James had other family members on this expedition, all ships Masters/Captains and Master Mariners, James, John and Robert. I do not know about John, however James and Robert were also the ships navigators on the voyage.  I will tell more about Captain James in another article, he was a very accomplished man. Robert is also recorded as Master of Sir Walter Raleigh’s vessel the “Rawley” which sailed in Sir Humphrey Gilbert’s expedition in 1583.

As an aside, one of the cool things about doing your family history & genealogy. My father’s mother maiden name King, was descended from Captain King who was Captain on the “Diamond” on later expedition that left England in 1609, (fn. 1) he went down with the Diamond off of Ushant Point English Channel on way back to England. I wonder if Capt. James and Capt. William ever thought that a grand daughter from King, and a grandson from Davis, would meet in Arkansas and marry, over 300 yrs after they stepped on the shores of America.

I will not go into a lot of detail on the voyage itself. They departed England on May 31/June 1, 1607. They arrived Isle of Terceria or Graciosa on June 25th, they spent a few days in and around Flores Islands. They arrived off the coast of America July 30, 1607. One of the first places they laid to (anchored) was the Georges Islands, on August 9th being a Sunday the chief of both the ships with the majority of the men, landed on the island called St. George’s Island, beneath the “Cross of St. Georges Island” prayed and heard a sermon delivered to them by their preacher, Mr. Seymour. The very first thing they did when they landed on the coast of Sagadahoc, now Kennebec river, Maine, they prayed and asked for the Lord’s help, blessings, and guidance. They did this before making ANY decision on where to build the fort, where to plant or anything else.

For those who do not believe the cross has a place in public venues in America, well, they either are ignorant of the history of America, or they have a political agenda to remove every reference to our Lord Jesus Christ and God his father. I know for many of the leaders on the left, sadly it is the latter. The cross of Christ has been a fixture of the United States of America, since the beginning of it’s very foundation. The Cross at the Saint Georges Island was erected in 1605 in an expedition lead by Captain George Waymouth.

Although the founders did not want a church state based on one particular religion or religious group. They believed it was founded on the truth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Patrick Henry said “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Patrick Henry said “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Where do you think they got their ideas of liberty, freedom and the system of government, 3 branches of government, God the father, Christ the son, and the Holy Ghost the spirit. 12 members on a jury, the twelve apostles. The list is endless, Harvard, Yale, i.e. schools were originally charged with teaching the truth and gospel of Jesus, hence the term schools of “Higher” learning.

I say therefore to you who deny the founding of our Nation as founded on the principles of Jesus Christ. You are very mistaken, get over it, the truth will always win! The truth is simple and it is plain, not hard to understand at all if you are “open” to it!

“Knowledge of history is the precondition of political intelligence. Without history, a society shares no common memory of where it has been or what its core values are.”
