Love Has No Bounds…Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial

I started this quest on twitter to contact my old friends there, because I found two who had passed away over two years ago. I hadn’t known they passed away, because, I do not like to bother people who have unfollowed me, or who suddenly stop retweeting, or mentioning me, because I do not want them to feel threatened, put upon, or otherwise bothered by me, if I have done something to offend them or something…

After finding two that I had been quite close to, that had died, and I hadn’t known, because I didn’t want to be a bother…It broke my heart, that they may have died, thinking I did not care, or that I did not think of them, and remember the many times we had talked. It broke my heart, they may have passed, not knowing, I appreciated the short time I had gotten to know them, even though I had never met them in person, heard their voice, or seen their face. Still yet, I had gotten to know their hearts, and perhaps even more so, since I had never met them in any other context than their thoughts, and heart felt words..

It’s amazing, how close we can get to people who touch our hearts online, with their words, thoughts, and comments, made 140 characters at a time. I have found much grief, since I started this quest, a number of others have passed away. I find memorials on their twitter timelines, from their families, speaking about how those who died, had, had cancer, or some other disease that my twitter friends never spoke of, you never heard them complain, or speak of their conditions. They had gotten into twitter, and / or facebook because it helped take their minds off their pain, or sickness, talking to others, and socializing online, when they were too sick, or in too much pain, to get out among the public and mingle…I cannot bring myself to unfollow their inactive accounts. It somehow seems sacred, and a tribute to their having been. There is @STXherry whose account has been deleted, @14Kathi, @JimmyMcIver, @marknelza, @MsJeffDesigns, @PolarCoug, Bossy Monica aka @MrsDarcy119

Another who I did not know personally was pointed out to me by BOSSY Erin Cruz aka @WAGNERGIRLE is Jeff Hedgpeth aka @AlinskyDefeater God bless & Jesus keep him and his family also always…

Who knows how many others I haven’t reached yet. I will always follow them with my account, just as I will follow them some day, in death…God bless and Jesus keep them, and their families always… For the memories of those mentioned here see the end of this piece…

I know this, because I suffer from chronic back pain, from it being broken when I was a teenager, and me not finding out until I was in my 30’s, after it had so messed up the nerves in my spine. So that it was even painful, to be touched physically by others in any way. I was virtually unable to do anything, other than stand for short periods, sit for a little longer, or lay down flat on my back most of the time. It has gotten much better, since I started trusting only, and completely in the Lord to help me with it, and depending on Him to heal me of it.

I haven’t been completely healed, but it has become much more bearable, and I am able to get a decent nights sleep now. I don’t speak of it online, most do not know of this, none know how bad it is, or how bad it has been. I, like others, I have known, do not like to complain, we’d rather think of others, and try to help them with their pain, sickness, etc. They, like I, do not want sympathy, they want to be treated like everyone else, they want to love, laugh, and enjoy the life they have left. They do not want to waste it, thanking people for their sympathy, etc. They want to enjoy it, by thanking people for their friendship, the good times they enjoy, the conversations that make them, think not of themselves, but of others, and the enjoyments of life, the Lord, and His creation..

Perhaps, now, as I speak of this, I am now learning another reason, the Lord has allowed me to suffer in this condition I have dealt with most of my life, so that I could now write of it, and help others understand, what I understand, about others in my place, or their loved ones, who enjoy the time they have online with friends, friends who they have never seen, never heard their voice, nor ever seen their face, yet greater still, they have felt their hearts, touched their souls, and understood their spirits, as most people never get the chance too. This is what God gives to those, whose suffering, takes their minds elsewhere, instead of dwelling on themselves….

I am also, now able to help my dad, which means more to me than I can put into words, I love and respect my dad more than anyone else in this world. I really hadn’t expected a lot, or asked for a lot from the Lord, as far as helping me, just that I am able to bless, and help others. At least until I got married, and now, it is still more for her, than for me. She deserves nice things, and I need to be able to provide them, and to take care of her, my son, and the children. and grandchildren she brought with her into our marriage.

The Lord is good, He has helped me greatly since we got married. and I am able to do a lot more than I used to be able too. My faith is great, his work is greater, and I will get ever better with God’s grace and help.

I have shed many tears, and dealt with much grief for others, since beginning this quest, and perhaps this piece I am writing now, is where the Lord wanted it to take me. I know He guides each of my steps, my heart is His, and His love dwells there. I do not always let that love out, because far too many times still, I let myself get in the way, and fail to let Him flow through me.

I hope this gives some comfort to the many families, and people who have had to deal with the grief of losing their family members to some disease, or a sudden death, who have left a memorial to their loved ones on Facebook, Twitter, or some other social media site. Know that your family members experienced much more than you know, with their adventures online, socializing with others. Your loved ones were touched to their very core by the friends they made here, and those friendships, helped them greatly to face what they dealt with, that took them away from us, far too early, but made their time here much more pleasant and bearable, as they made their way over the horizon, that we someday will also find in the distance… They were touched, and they touched many others, their work here was complete..Know they enjoyed it greatly…

God bless and Jesus keep you and yours always, and know you are always thought of, and remembered with each breath we take….

The last tweet on his account comes from his daughter who set up a gofundme account Dec 28, 2014 for donations to help with funeral costs….She explains there: “On Christmas Eve morning, PolarCoug was gloriously and joyously reunited with his mother and father, and was welcomed into Paradise with the embrace of our Savior. His passing was sudden and unexpected. And while our hearts are breaking, we also take comfort in knowing that he is finally free from the debilitating pain he had been experiencing for the past 7 years. While we will miss him terribly, I look forward to the day when our family is once again together – families are forever.

Due to his unexpected passing, we were financially unprepared for the costs associated with funeral arrangements. We are seeking donations to help cover these costs. Any assistance would be forever appreciated.”

Then we have Bossy Monica She added Bossy in front of her name as many of our friends did after some leftist so-called feminist complained about men calling female bosses “Bossy” Thereby making fun of those “feminists” in America who have nothing better to do than complain about things that matter little when all things are counted and life is done…God bless & Jesus keep her and her family always. Her family put a very poignant obituary and tribute to her and her twitter followers here…

So many good ones, we know such a short time, who make such a great impact on our lives. To be remembered is a thing I think we all desire in the end…that is what matters…

As I said I did not know Jeff Hedgpeth personally so I cannot say anything about him as a person..perhaps some of you who did could send me some comments I could make a compilation of to add here to his memory…

If I find anymore of our twitter friends and family gone on before us while I am on this quest….I will add them as I find them….

To the Doctors, Nurses and Healthcare Professionals We Thank You!

I am duty bound to acknowledge the people of the healthcare profession who everyday do the Lord’s work in saving and / or extending life. I recently experienced some trouble myself that put me in ICU at Hillcrest South Hospital.  I use a nebulizer and the medicine I was given was not effective, I used it to the point of causing myself respiratory failure, because instead of helping me it made it worse. My wife tried to get me to go to the emergency room, me being a man, of course I refused. She then called my father, who she knew if I listened to anyone it would be him. He didn’t ask me to go, he just called the ambulance and told me I was going. Actually the way it went is he told me I needed to go to the hospital. I told him I would, he told me he knew I would because he’d already called the ambulance.

The hospital in the small town I live outside of had no ICU so the doctors (Prytkov & McMasters) at the emergency room started calling hospitals to find an ICU that could take me. Meanwhile they had put me on a ventilator using a mask. I kept removing the mask, after tying it and doing various other things to keep me from removing it, the doctor decided to put me in a medical coma so they could continue trying to help me. I was completely out of it, I knew nothing of what was going on. The ambulance in this small town also did not have a ventilator, I would say all part of the rationing taking place since the democrats passed Obamacare. They therefore called another ambulance service to transport me to Tulsa.

The doctors initially thought I had pneumonia, when they got me to Tulsa they put me on the ventilator where they put the tube down into my lungs and also put me on a feeding tube. I am told they could see my body was fighting the ventilator still although I was in the medical coma. One of the ICU nurses (Tyson) then asked in they could paralyze me so my body would quit fighting the help they were trying to give me. The doctor ok’d the procedure so they used the same drug they use in lethal injection (or so I am told) Mydazolam, pretty amazing what doctors can do these days.

There are many health professionals I need to thank at Hillcrest Cushing and Hillcrest South. To name a few I want to thank Doctors Jerome, Worley and Regan Vaughan who each played a key role in my recovery. I also want to thank the many nurses including Melissa, Tyson, Brett, Marcus, Todd, Veronica, Mike and many others, the respiratory therapists, the many who drew blood including the one who told me she is called the vampire cause she could draw blood on anyone, and who thereafter when she would come I would ask her is she was feeling hungry again. The sweet little housekeeper who told me bless you each time she came in an left. I also want to thank the night nurse Debbie who I, my wife and mother had a number of Bible discussions with.  Mike, David, Todd, and the many others who gave me breathing treatments.

I must say as many of them would probably attest I am not the best patient to try to help, and I am certainly not the most gracious when it comes to hospital food. I do thank you all though for putting up with me and helping me when I was unable to help myself. For the countless hours you in the healthcare profession spend caring for those like me! We thank you all for your selfless giving, time and attention, you would truly have to be called of the Lord to do a profession where there is little recognition and even littler thanks for all you do. I also must not forget to thank the case management people who worked tirelessly to help me get the things I needed so I could attend church on Easter Sunday which happens to be my spiritual birthday and which I needed more than anything else at the time.

Again thank you all at Hillcrest South and Hillcrest hospitals who do such good work and care so much for the people put in your care. God bless and Jesus keep you all, always!

Caring for Our Troops: Protecting those Who Risk their Lives to Protect Us

Serving in any army, particularly one as actively engaged in warfare as the US Army and the rest of the forces, is a big price for any soldier to pay. Political views aside, the courageous women and men who serve in the forces are immediately putting their lives on the line because they believe in protecting their country and the values upon which it was founded. These are people who, when returning home, are not only filled with an immense pride and dignity, but a deep love for their homeland which they will defend with their lives. But it is not only their lives that they put on the line – it is their livelihood, and quality of life itself. The work they do often leaves devastating implications on themselves and their loved ones, especially in the case of PTSD. And more than ever, veterans are left in the dark when it comes to getting the proper healthcare, as well as the chance to enjoy a normal, civilian life.

When it’s Over

… it’s never really over. People who sign up for the military are more than aware that it is a life-changing decision for themselves and their loved ones, and that nothing will ever be the same again. But this does not immediately render their right to a normal lifestyle as non-valid. While many people who have served are able to return to a civilian lifestyle and enjoy a regular job, bring up a family, and celebrate life in general, there are many others who struggle to adjust and find employment. The country’s turmoil with the recession has made employment difficult for people across a wide spectrum of demographics, even those with high qualifications from leading post-secondary institutions. People who have served in the forces have an incredible set of skills and qualifications, not only from their training but from their experiences on the field and the emotional growth and resilience they have cultivated. These people – dedicated, loyal, disciplined and trustworthy – make the perfect candidates for employees, yet are often considered “over-qualified” or in some cases, too far removed from civilian life.

Everyone deserves a fair chance to make a living, especially those who have risked their lives to protect others. Healthcare and a chance for employment isn’t an entitlement but a right. Healthcare has come a long way for veterans who are now covered for life, but this doesn’t mean that they always receive the best care and for illnesses such as PTSD, this is detrimental. Veterans also receive discounts on transportation on major routes for Greyhound and Amtrak, and individual businesses may choose to offer advantages as well as a small token of appreciation for the time they have served. When venturing abroad, vets can also look into coverage for pre-existing conditions if their healthcare doesn’t take care of their needs outside of the US. Fortunately, there are many companies offering viable options, but coverage should extend for vets outside of the US as well if they choose to travel. The Foreign Medical Program is responsible for taking care of the medical needs of vets abroad, but they are subject to certain criteria like injuries which are a result of an incident while in service. For some veterans, going abroad is a chance to make a new start, rebuild family life, and have a new experience – this is right we should all have. Surely veterans should have this chance too.

Additionally, the number of homeless veterans is also alarming. Various factors such as unemployment and ongoing mental health issues, as well as the lack of a personal support system and a stable infrastructure in place contribute to many living on the streets. As well as facing extreme weather conditions, physical health problems and worrying about their next meal, they also face the stigma of being homeless and being outcast by society.

We praise our military and we use them not only to fight the battles of a few men in power, but as the beacon of strength and loyalty which is symbolic of the United States. We uphold our Armed Forces which a pride and fervor which is virtually unparalleled in the rest of the world. So why, then, do we give our vets such a cold welcome when the homecoming ceremonies are over? It’s time to change things and give them a country they can still be proud to fight for, and a life they can live when they have sacrificed everything for us.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Final Battle For Many Brave Troops

Many troops are surviving difficult and unspeakable traumas on the battlefield, only to return home and face another battle, this time against an enemy that has no face. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is generally brought on as a result of witnessing terrifying or life threatening events, and no situations fits this scenario more than being in a war zone. Recent statistics suggest that as many as four out of five veterans of the Vietnam War suffered with post-traumatic stress disorder at some point in their lifetimes after they had returned home and reintegrated into normal society after the war. From the more modern wars that are fresher in the public’s collective consciousness, it has been found that at least 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan was veterans have suffered from or are suffering from either PTSD, depression or both. However many senior members of the military expect that this figure will rise significantly, and that the mental effects of operating within the theater of war on our brave troops is much more dramatic than was originally expected.

Understanding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Although the symptoms and the severity of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder differ from person to person, some of the key characteristics of the condition include experiencing severe anxiety, suffering from flash backs of the traumatic event and having nightmares or uncontrollable thoughts. It is perfectly normal to experience any or all of these symptoms after you have witnessed a traumatic event, but if the symptoms last for more than a couple of weeks, then it’s likely that you are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and may well need help and support to overcome the condition. Your doctor is likely to propose a treatment plan that combines medication to lessen and control your symptoms in conjunction with therapy to help you process and overcome the traumatic events that have caused your PTSD.

Notable Historic Cases of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

It’s important to remember that suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is nothing to be ashamed of. Notable historic military leaders, such as Alexander the Great are thought to have suffered from the illness. After having spent most of his life engaged in various battles, Alexander the Great ended his life as an alcoholic who was highly suspicious of everybody around him and easily alarmed. At the end of his career he his pathological suspicion meant that he had all of the lieutenants that had served immediately under him killed. Although the term didn’t exist at the time, in modern terms it is clear that his years on the battle field had left Alexander the Great with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

In a comparatively more recent example of warfare induced Post Traumatic stress disorder, research has also revealed that hero and founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale (sometimes called ‘The Lady of the Lamp’) also suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder on her return from the Crimean War. Conditions for the nurse were unimaginably hard: she was working for 20 hours every day, and dealt with the most troublesome and difficult patients herself, dealing with conditions such as frostbite, gangrene and dysentery on a daily basis. Once the war was over and Florence returned home, her personality was completely changed. She displayed symptoms of anorexia, chronic fatigue, insomnia, irritability and then took to her bed for thirty years, simply not being able to find a reason to get up. Again, although the condition wasn’t  discovered and categorized at the time, all of this symptoms are key indicators of post-traumatic stress disorder and several scholars have confirmed it is clear that Florence Nightingale also suffered from the condition.

The point is that no one is immune from the risks of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: the illness is not discriminatory, and it affects people from all lifestyles and backgrounds. There is no shame in struggling with PTSD, particularly if you have returned from serving your country in the theater of war. What is important is that you recognize the signs of condition, and seek help as soon as possible, so that you can get your life back on track and achieve the happiness you deserve.

VA Scandal Whistle Blower Reveals How Government Bureaucrats Empire Build & Grow Fiefdoms

In an interview with Neal Cavuto: Whistle Blower Scott Davis Who at the request of the VA [Veterans Administration] office of Inspector General to confirm rumors or activity at the VA Health Eligibility Center (HEC) in Atlanta dealing with the destruction of 17,000 applications for VA healthcare. Davis Reveals the Big story is the Back Log of Over 600,000 Individual applications for VA Health Care as well as the 17,000 Health Benefit Applications Were Deliberately Destroyed by VA Union Employee Members. Davis adds “That’s shameful.” I agree!

When asked by Neal why the VA HEC would destroy the applications. Davis also Reveals White House Pressure For VA HEC to hit their numbers, you’ve heard a lot about the 14 day turn-around time for the hospitals, but what most people don’t know is, there’s a 5 day turn-around time for applications and if we don’t hit that 5 day turn-around time it effects performance goals for people in senoir leadership positions. Davis went on to say. “What happens is that we’re currently neglecting not only the right thing to do which is to process applications. Not delete them, we have a huge system integrity issue at VA. For example, the VA right now can’t even tell investigators what happened to those applications, because they can’t verify where they are, what happened to them, if they were deleted, why were they deleted and why were there was no paper record showing the justification for deleting those records.”

Neal said “We’ve asked for a statement from the VA on this, we’ve yet to get one…I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here.” Neal went on to ask if the workers just got overwhelmed and dumped the applications in the trash. Davis responded: “I know there were suspect activities before I started working there in 2011, what I can tell you is there is so much pressure on the employees to get stuff done, so that management can meet goals…So what happens is instead of VA focusing on doing what’s right for our nations veterans, meaning taking time, processing each application diligently and appropriately, pressure is placed on front line employees to overwork themselves, rush through the application process to hit goals for members of management.”

Neal asked Davis if the goal was a dollar goal or to get the applications complete. Like to keep on top of it to make sure there were no delays or Keep on top of it and get rid of something that could hurt our numbers. Davis responded from what he had seen “it is based on a performance goal…What you find is there is extensive pressure placed on the staff…to focus our attention to applications that are based on specific campaigns coming out of Washington. For example; We actually put applications aside so we could focus on the ACA [Obamacare] applications that came in last summer. That’s wrong, we should focus on each veterans application as they come in, not because of special campaigns coming out of [Washington] D.C.”

When Neal remarked about the protections provided by federal law to whistle blowers.
Davis said also “I reached out to White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors [one of Obama’s top advisers, who Obama put over analyzing VA problems] to share my concerns about the VA and to give Nabors a copy of my Whistle Blower Complaints. Somehow that correspondence & complaint was given to the very same management group at the HEC who was harassing me. Davis added: “I received an email from my current manager Sherry Williams saying ‘I’m contacting you on behalf of acting Secretary Gibson and Rob Nabors.’ I let the White House, Mr. Nabors, and Acting Secretary Gibson know this had happened. To this date they have taken No Action against Miss Williams.”

Davis went on to say “I contacted the Inspector General to let them know what Miss Williams had done, and keep in mind Miss Williams used to work for the Inspector General. Which makes it even more shameful. I was told by the Office that was Investigating the HEC, They could not address the issue that I had to call a Hot Line. When I called the Hot Line, the Hot Line told me to call the Office of Special Counsel. Now I did get a contact from the White House Counsel’s Office or [White House] Office of Special Counsel,.. and I use that name,.. and I contacted that Person to file a complaint. But, I want to be honest…The only reason I haven’t been fired today is because I have been working with Chairman Miller’s Team [Chairman Jeff Miller. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs] as well as my Congressmen Tom Price and Senator Johnny Isaacson. If I did not have elected Officials working with me to address these issues, I would have easily been terminated a long time ago. Especially I would have to thank the team over at AJC [Atlanta Journal Constitution] that broke the article this weekend.”

Neal says “it seems the VA going years back, is overwhelmed and cannot handle the workload”
Whistle Blower Davis responded “I think if you allow the employees and the people who go to work everyday to service our nations veterans, the work will get done, the money is there, it’s over 160 Billion dollars in the [Federal] Budget. But you brought up a key point Neal, and that is, this goes back years, and that’s because the leaders in the VA, in particular VHA, the healthcare side have been in leadership at VA in many cases, some before I was even born at the start of their career at the VA”

Neal said it seemed like the lifelong bureaucrats at the VA seemed to jump through hoops in order to get those bonuses and make the numbers.” Scott Davis responded “I think a lot of managers did it to make the numbers to get the bonus, but also look at the influence of government. People in government don’t just do what they do for their bonuses….They also do it to Empire Build. The more you hit your numbers the more you can expand your department, you can expand your Fiefdom at VA as I like to call it. So for example in our department where we work. We brought in about 4 or 5 new GS-15 Positions. These are 130-150 thousand dollar a year positions, yet we haven’t done anything to bring in workers who can actually bring down the workload. That’s what a veteran wants. He or she wants their healthcare application processed, they don’t need another executive to stand around looking at other people doing the work.”

Neal asked, if there was any metric or was there some sort of quality [assurance] ..something like JD Power type award, or recognition, or bonus for behavior that would make things better for Vets?

Davis reveals: “I can tell you from the whistle blowers I have talked too, that work at VHA. Their account is, it was the Bonus Structure was more about Rewarding the Executives, and it Incentivised not fully disclosing Medical Needs of the Veterans. For example if people in Congress knew that veterans needed more medical care, they probably would have given us more money to send vets to mental health professionals, to send people to specialty care physicians. If you don’t disclose that information the veterans don’t get the monies they need for the care they deserve and have earned.”

POISONOUS PLANTS OF THE UNITED STATES

Poisonous Plants of the United States—There are in the United States, numerous common, well-known plants which possess poisonous properties. What these properties are have not been, hitherto, so well-known. The Division of Botany of the United States Department of Agriculture, after three years spent in collecting information concerning these plants, and after numerous experiments, prepared a list of the most common, which will be of great value to farmers and others. They are found growing everywhere and the description of them is made full enough to enable anyone to identify them.

FalseHelleboreFALSE HELLEBORE.—(Veratrum viride —botanical name). Other names: American white hellebore; white hellebore; swamp hellebore; Indian poke; meadow poke; poke root; Indian uncus; puppet root; earth gall; crow poison; devil’s bite; duckretter; itch weed; bugbane; wolfs-bane; bear corn.

It is a stout herb, simple stemmed and perennial; 2 to 7 feet high with a fleshy root, 1 to 3 inches long; large plaited, stemless leaves of varying size, and bears a large, loose terminal cluster of yellowish-green flowers which blossom from May to July.

It is a native of the United States and grows abundantly in wet meadows, along mountain brooks and in cold localities in the south, and is found everywhere from Maine to Alaska. As a medicine, an overdose is fatal, and in its natural state men and animals have been poisoned. The seeds are poisonous to chickens, and its leaves dangerous to all animals except sheep, elk and those which chew the cud. Its root and young leaves are fatal to tan, being frequently eaten in the belief that they are those of the marsh marigold.

The action of the poison is on the heart and spinal cord, both of which it tends to paralyze. It has also a violent emetic and cathartic effect. The symptoms are burning in the throat, an increased flow of saliva, loss of sight, vomiting, purging, severe headache, dizziness, weak pulse, difficulty in breathing and prostration. Death is caused by paralysis of the heart.

American PokeweedPOKEWEED—(Phytolacca decandra— botanical name). Other names: Poke; poke berry; garget; pigeon berry; cocum; jalap; skoke; American nightshade; crowberry: cancer root; chongras; redweed; red-ink plant; pocanbush.

It is a smooth, rank, succulent (juicy), perennial, 6 to 9 feet high. with a thick, half-woody root, purplish stems, large alternate leaves and numerous long clusters of small greenish-white flowers, which blossom throughout the summer, and are followed in autumn by shining, purple-black berries. It grows in rich. moist soils, especially as a weed in cultivated and waste grounds from Maine and Northern Illinois to Florida. and westward to Texas, eastern Kansas, and southern Minnesota.

The pokeweed is a well-known plant and has many household uses when deprived of its poisonous qualities. The root and the alcoholic extract of the fruit, are regarded as remedies for the itch and other skin diseases and for rheumatism. The fresh shoots are esteemed as a substitute for asparagus, but the root must be carefully removed, or it will give the mess a bitter taste, and a large amount of the root will prove dangerous. Some birds eat the berries with perfect safety, but they are poisonous to human beings.

The root is often mistaken for that of the parsnip, artichoke, and horse-radish. The seed is the most fatal part of the plant. It is a violent but slow-acting emetic; it affects the nerves and muscles, producing retching, spasms, severe purging, and sometimes convulsions. Death is due to the paralysis of the respiring organs (windpipe and lungs).

CornCockleCORN COCKLE—(Agrostemma githago —botanical name) Other names: Cockle; rose campion; bastard nigelle; old maid’s pink; licheta; crown of the field.

It is a whitish, woolly annual, 1 to 3 feet high, with an erect stem, showy, violet-red flowers, and numerous rough, black, irregularly rounded seeds, very much wrinkled, whence the name “cockle.”

It is a noxious weed in Europe, and in the United States it is found in the grain fields from Maine to North Dakota, southward through eastern Kansas to Louisiana and Florida; seldom in Wyoming and California, and scarcely at all in the dry regions of the west. The poison is freely soluble in water, and has a sharp, burning taste. It has no odor, but when inhaled in the smallest quantity it produces violent sneezing. When briskly shaken up with water, it froths like soap. The poison is found in nearly all parts of the plant, but mainly in the kernel of the seed.

Poultry and household animals are frequently poisoned by it, but poisoning is generally produced by a poor grade of flour made from wheat containing cockle seeds. Machinery is used to remove these seeds from the wheat, but the difficulty of separating them is so great that the result is not entirely accomplished. In European countries the quantity of these poisonous seeds in wheat sometimes amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. Flour containing a smaller amount has often been made into bread and eaten with fatal results, the heat of the baking oven and the chemical action of yeast, etc., not always being sufficient to decompose, or destroy the effects of the poison. The effect may be acute (temporary), or, if a small quantity of the meal is eaten regularly, it may become chronic, in which case it is a disease sometimes known under the name of “githagism.”

The symptoms of acute poisoning are: Intense irritation of the whole digestive tract; vomiting; headache; nausea; vertigo; diarrhea; hot skin; sharp pains in the spine; difficulty in walking, and depressed breathing. Stupor sometimes sets in and it may be followed by death. Experiments in chronic or repeated and continual uses of the cockle, show chronic diarrhea and gradual depression, loss of vigor in breathing and muscular movements until death ensues.

Corn cockle meal is easily detected in second and third class flour by the presence of the black, roughened scales of the seed coat. These are sure to occur if the flour has not been well bolted. Its presence is also detected by the peculiar odor produced when the meal is moistened.

The plant is propagated by the cockle seeds in wheat used for planting.

DwarfLarkspur2DWARF LARKSPUR—(Delphinium tricorne—botanical name) Other name: Stagger weed. The larkspurs are a numerous family of erect herbs, with palm shaped leaves, and a long cluster of showy flowers. They are commonly blue, and are further characterized by the absence of green parts, and the presence of a peculiar spur-like appendage. There are over 25 species native to the United States, few of which have a very wide distribution, but some of the Western species are extremely abundant in their natural place of growth. They have a general reputation of being poisonous to cattle.

The dwarf larkspur is a smooth, simple-stemmed perennial, 6 to 12 inches high, with a tuberous root, deeply 5-parted leaves, and a long, loose cluster of blue (sometimes white) flowers, which appear in April and May. It grows in clayey soil and open woods, from Pennsylvania and the mountains of North Carolina to Southern Minnesota. It is especially fatal to cattle in April when the fresh leaves appear.

WyomingLarkspur2WYOMING LARKSPUR— (Delphinum geyeri—botanical name) Other name: Poison weed. This is a somewhat hairy perennial, 10 to 20 inches high, with a large, sphere-shaped tuft of rather thick dull-green leaves, and a central column of deep azure-blue flowers. It is a common prairie plant of Wyoming and northern Colorado, where it is the most troublesome of the poisonous plants of that section. Ranchmen suffer considerable loss from it, especially in early spring, when the dark green tufts of foliage are conspicuous features of a dry and barren landscape.

PurpleLarkspur1PURPLE LARKSPUR—(Delphinum menziesii—botanical name) A hairy tuberous-rooted perennial, about a foot high, at the base of which is a cluster of finely divided, long-stemmed leaves, and a single column of showy blue flowers, which appear at any time between April and July. The flowers are few in number, but are extra large, being from 1 to 11; inches broad. This species is found native on hillsides from the vicinity of San Francisco to British Columbia and eastward as far as South Dakota. In Montana it is very common.

Cattlemen place the percentage of fatal cases where cattle eat this plant at 20 per cent, when the animals are not properly treated, and 5 per cent otherwise.

Other species of larkspur in the same locality, poisonous to animals are: the tall mountain larkspur, sometimes known as cow poison, which grows in moist shady places from Monterrey, California, to British Columbia.

A lavender-colored, fleshy-rooted larkspur, also fatal to animals, grows in the moist salty soils south of San Francisco and Stockton.

Sierra Exif JPEGBLACK CHERRY—(Prunus serotina— botanical name) Other names: wild black cherry; wild cherry; rum cherry; whiskey cherry.

A valuable forest tree, 60 to 80 feet high, with thin, reddish-brown, scaly bark, tapering, saw-edged leaves, cylindrical clusters of small white flowers, appearing in April and May, and shining black, edible fruit, about a quarter of an inch in diameter. It grows abundantly in forests in the Middle Atlantic and Ohio River States; in the open country in the Southern New England and Gulf States, and westward from Illinois to South Dakota, eastern Nebraska and Arkansas. It is extensively cultivated as a shade and ornamental tree in Wyoming and Colorado, and eastward to the Atlantic.

The fruit is pleasant though slightly bitter and astringent in taste, and in some localities it is much used to flavor liquor. Poisoning is frequently caused in cattle by eating the wilted leaves from branches thrown carelessly within their reach. Children occasionally die from eating the kernels of the seed or from swallowing the fruit whole. The base of the poison in the black cherry is prussic acid, the smell of which like that of almonds, can always be distinguished, and as cattle are fond of the flavor, which is strong in the leaves, they often find death in their food.

The symptoms of poisoning in cattle are: Labored breathing, diminished pulse, numbness, protruding eyeballs, convulsions, and death from paralysis of the lungs. In some cases there is frothing at the mouth, and always an unmistakable odor of prussic acid in the breath.

Astragalus mollissimus2WOOLLY LOCO WEED — (Astragalus mollissimus—botanical name) Other names: Loco weed; crazy weed, so-called from the Spanish or Mexican word which means “crazy.” A silvery-white, silky leaved perennial, 8 to 12 inches high, with an abundance of soft foliage springing out in a cluster from a short central stem close to the ground. The flowers are pea shaped and usually purple. The pod is distinctively two-celled. The plant is a native of the Great Plains region, extending from Western Texas and New Mexico northward to South Dakota and Wyoming, being most abundant in Colorado and in the western part of Nebraska and Kansas. It grows both on the open prairie and on rocky hillsides.

Horses, cattle, and sheep are affected by loco, but the principal damage is done to horses. The effect is slow, such as that caused in man, by the continued, excessive use of alcohol, tobacco, or morphine. There are two stages. The first, which may last for several months, is a period of hallucination or mania, accompanied by defective eyesight, during which the animal may perform all sorts of ridiculous antics. Having acquired a taste for the plant, the animal refuses every other kind of food, and the second stage is ushered in. This is a lingering period of emaciation, characterized by sunken eyeballs, lusterless hair, and feeble movements. The animal finally dies as if from starvation, in periods ranging from a few months to one or two years.

There are over half a dozen species of this plant, all of them highly detrimental to live stock, and particularly dangerous as most of them are green at periods when other vegetation is dry and brown, and, therefore, eagerly eaten by cattle.

ARAGALLUSLAMBERTISTEMLESS LOCO WEED—(Aragallus lambertii—botanical name) Other names: Loco weed; crazy weed; Colorado loco vetch. This plant differs from the true loco weed most conspicuously in its more erect and branchless habit, its longer leaflets, which are long, instead of egg shaped, and the one-celled seed pod. It ranges over the same territory as the woolly loco weed, but extends farther, being found throughout the Great Plains from British America to Mexico, and flourishes higher in the mountains, being found at an elevation of 8,000 feet above the sea level. Its poisonous character, symptoms and effects are the same as in the case of the true loco weed.

Crotalaria sagittalisRATTLEBOX—(Crotalaria sagittalis —botanical name) Other names: Rattleweed; wild pea. A hairy annual, 3 to 18 inches high, with simple undivided leaves, 1 to 2 inches long, and small, yellow pea like flowers appearing in July. The seed pods are about an inch in length when mature, and are nearly black. They are much inflated, and as the walls are stiff and thin and very resonant, they make excellent miniature rattles when the seeds have become detached from their fastenings inside the pod. They give a sharp rattle at every wind or other cause which shakes the plant. It is a native in low sandy soils from the Atlantic to Minnesota and Eastern Kansas, and is quite common as far as the Pacific coast.

The poisonous qualities are in the leaves and in the seeds. Horses and cattle are sometimes killed by eating meadow grass mixed with the plant. The symptoms are: Decline of vigor, and a gradual loss of flesh as in loco weed poisoning, but it does not produce the craziness characteristic of the loco.

Euphorbia lathyris1CAPER SPURGE—(Euphorbia lathyris— botanical name) Other names: Garden spurge; myrtle spurge; mole plant; mole weed; mole tree; gopher plant; anti-gopher plant; wild caper; caper bush: wolf’s milk; springwort.

A smooth herb, and milky-juiced perennial, 2 to 3 feet high, with a stiff, erect stem, and opposite four-ranked leaves, the lower of which are thick and oblong, the upper thin, broad, and heart-shaped. The flowers are greenish-yellow and rather small. The three-seeded fruit is conspicuous. It is a common garden plant, sparingly grown in wet ground in California and Texas, and in the Atlantic states from New Jersey to West Virginia and North Carolina.

The fresh milky juice is exceedingly acrid and the fruit is highly purgative and poisonous, and is a dangerous household remedy. Women and children are often poisoned by handling the plant and getting the juice on the face. Cattle are sometimes overcome by its use, but goats will eat it extensively without harm to themselves, but their milk will then possess all the venomous properties of the plant. When applied to the skin, the juice causes redness, itching, pimples, and sometimes gangrene, the effect often lasting more than a week. The seed taken internally in overdose, will inflame the mouth and stomach, and cause intense diarrhea and vomiting. If the dose be large, there will be nervous disorders, unconsciousness, general collapse and death.

Euphorbia marginata1SNOW IN THE MOUNTAIN—(Euphorbia marginata—botanical name) An annual plant 2 to 4 feet high, differing most conspicuously from the caper spurge in its more slender and less branching habit, and in having a broad white margin, or edge around its upper leaves, It is a handsomer plant, and often used for decorative purposes. This spurge is a native weed of the Great Plains from Montana to Mexico and is rapidly spreading eastward. It is cultivated for ornament in the North Atlantic States and has reached Europe.

The poison of this plant reaches the stomach from the eating of honey derived from its flowers. Large quantities of fall honey are annually made in localities where the plant grows in great abundance. The honey is hot and disagreeable to the taste, but does not appear to be a very serious poison, its effects being confined to vomiting and purging. The milky juice, applied to the skin, causes an itching inflammation, accompanied by pimples and blisters which last for several days. This blistering action, is taken advantage of by stock raisers in Texas, who use the juice to brand cattle, it being held by some of them to be superior to a red-hot iron for that purpose, because the scar heals more rapidly.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPOISON IVY—(Rhus radicans—botanical name) Other names: Poison oak; poison vine, three-leaved ivy; poison creeper; mercury or markry; black mercury; markweed; pickry.  A climbing or trailing shrub (sometimes erect), with variable three-foliate leaves, aerial rootlets, and greenish flowers, appearing in May and June. The smooth, waxy, white fruit often remains on the plant until late in the winter. The leaves often resemble those of the box-elder. They differ from those of the Virginia creeper in having only three leaflets instead of five. Poison ivy grows everywhere in open brush, in ravines, and on the borders of woods, and it is spread along the roadsides and cultivated fields from seeds carried by crows, woodpeckers, and other birds that feed upon its fruit in winter.

The poison in this plant is a non-volatile oil, that is, an oil that does not evaporate or lose its strength by exposure to the air. It is found in all parts of the plant, even in the wood after long drying. Like all oils it is not soluble in water, and cannot, therefore, be washed off the skin by water alone. It is readily removed by alcohol, and very easily destroyed by an alcoholic solution of sugar of lead (lead acetate). Even burning it is attended with danger, for the smoke carries the poisonous oil and produces the same effect as handling the plant.

Rhus diversiloba1POISON OAK—(Rhus diversiloba— botanical name) Other names: Poison ivy; yeara; California poison sumac. The poison oak differs from the poison ivy mainly in the character of its leaflets, which are thicker and smaller and more nearly elliptical. The similarity of the leaves to those of the Western oaks gives the plant its common name. It grows wherever the poison ivy does, except on mountains, and its poisonous qualities are the same.

Rhus vernix1POISON SUMAC—(Rhus vernix—botanical name) Other names: Swamp sumac; dogwood; poison dogwood; poison elder; poison ash; poison tree; poison wood; poison swamp sumac; thunderwood. A tree-like shrub 6 to 30 feet high, with long pinnate (feather shaped) leaves having from 7 to 13 leaflets, without marginal teeth. The wood has a faint sulphurous odor, which, together with the leaf scars, which are very prominent, enables one to distinguish the plant from other shrubbery in winter. It grows in swamps and in damp woods from Florida to Canada, and westward to Louisiana. The poison affects the skin in the same way as poison ivy, and requires the same remedies.

Aesculus pavia1RED BUCKEYE. — (Aesculus pavia— botanical name) Other names: Small buckeye; buckeye; horse chestnut. A shrub 8 to 12 feet high, with opposite, long-stemmed leaves, and numerous clusters of bright red flowers, which appear in March. The fruit is smooth, even when young; the seeds are mahogany-colored . and are elegantly polished. It grows in fertile valleys from Virginia to Florida, throughout the Gulf States to Louisiana, and in Arkansas. It is cultivated to some extent in Pennsylvania.

Cattle are sometimes killed by eating the fruit, but it is known as a means of catching fish. It was the practice formerly to stir the bruised seeds or twigs into small ponds, when the fish would become stupefied and, rising to the surface could be gathered by the hand. When thoroughly cooked, these fish were quite wholesome.

Aesculus hippocastanum1COMMON HORSE CHESTNUT—(Aesculus hippocastanum) This is regarded as poisonous, though in England, it is fed to cattle after the removal of the poison by thorough washing with alcohol. The Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra), and the California Buckeye (Aesculus Californica), are of a similar nature. The Round Valley Indians roast and leach the nuts in strong lye, and make a palatable soup and bread.

Cicuta maculata1WATER HEMLOCK—(Cicuta maculata —botanical name) Other names: American water hemlock; wild hemlock; spotted hemlock; spotted parsley; snakeweed; beaver poison; musquash root; muskrat weed; cowbane; spotted cowbane; children’s bane; death of man. A smooth, erect, perennial, 3 to 8 feet high, with a stiff, hollow stem, numerous branches, finely dissected leaves, white flowers, and a cluster of spindle-shaped roots, from 1-1/2 to 3 inches long, a characteristic of this plant. It grows in swamps and damp soil east and west.

It is one of the most poisonous plants in the United States, rapidly fatal alike to man and animals. The roots are especially dangerous, as they possess an aromatic taste, which suggests horse-radish, parsnips, artichokes, or sweet cicely. Children are apt to eat the roots on account of their appetizing appearance, temptingly lying above ground, being forced out of the soil by washing, freezing, or other causes, in early spring. Cattle eat the tubers, and in marshes, they are poisoned by drinking water contaminated by the juice of the roots which have been crushed by being trampled upon. The symptoms are: Vomiting, colicky pains, staggering, unconsciousness, and frightful convulsions ending in death.

Cicula vagans1OREGON WATER HEMLOCK—(Cicula vagans—botanical name) Other names: Water hemlock; Cicuta. This species of hemlock has often been mistaken for the common water hemlock, but that variety does not grow in the far northwestern States. Some other plants that are mistaken for it are the so-called “wild celery,” Oregon sweet cicely, and poison hemlock This plant is distinguished by leaves which spring directly from the ground, white flowers blooming in July and August, and a fleshy root which has a muskrat-like odor (musky), and its peculiar roots. It has two kinds of roots, one standing upright from 1 to 6 inches long by 1 to 2 inches thick, divided into numerous chambers by horizontal partitions. This root stock furnishes the bulk of the poison. The other portion of the root consists of solid, fleshy fibers which run along on, or just under the surface of the soil, and send off numerous rootlets from beneath. The plant grows in wet or marshy places, and ranges from British Columbia to northeastern California; and from Idaho to the southern Sierra Nevada. It is fatal to man and animals, some persons dying from having merely nibbled the root through curiosity.

POISON HEMLOCK.—(Conium maculatum—botanical name). Other names: Hemlock; wild hemlock; spotted parsley; stink weed; herb bennet; poison root; poison snakeweed; cashes; wodenwhistle. A smooth, purple spotted, hollow stemmed biennial (two years), 2 to 7 feet high, with large, parsley-like leaves and showy clusters of small white flowers, which appear in July and August. The fresh leaves have a nauseating taste, and when bruised, emit a characteristic mouse like odor. The plant is a native of Europe and Asia, but has become naturalized in the United States where it is common on waysides and in waste places.

The poison is in the seeds, and, especially at flowering time, in the leaves. The root is harmless in March, April and May, but poisonous afterward. This is the historical hemlock plant, which was administered to the Greek philosopher, Socrates and was in general use. The seeds are often mistaken for anise, the leaves for parsley, and the root for parsnip, and children have been poisoned by blowing whistles made from the hollow stem of the plant.

The symptoms are: A gradual weakening of the muscular power, loss of sight, but the mind remains clear until death ensues, which it soon does from the gradual paralysis of the lungs.

BROAD-LEAF LAUREL.——(Kalmia latifolia—botanieal name) Other names: Laurel; ivy; mountain laurel; sheep laurel; poison laurel; wood laurel: small laurel; rose laurel; high laurel; American laurel; poison ivy: ivy bush; ivy wood: big ivy; calico bush; spoonwood; kalmia; Nicky. A fine shrub, usually 4 to 8 feet, but sometimes 30 to 40 feet high. It has thick, flat and shining leaves, showy clusters of peculiarly shaped, viscid (sticky), and odorless pink flowers, which appear in May and June, and a round, sticky, dry uneatable fruit. It grows generally east of the Mississippi river.

Its leaves are commonly used for house decorations in winter, but they are poisonous, even goats dying from eating the leaves. The honey derived from the nectar of the flower is also poisonous, and the leaves are sometimes used to increase the intoxicating effects of liquors. They are also sometimes eaten with fatal effects by children who mistake them for the leaves of Wintergreen.

The symptoms are: Nausea, vomiting, frothing at the mouth, loss of sight, dizziness, drowsiness, stupor and then death. There are half a dozen or more native species of the broad-leaf laurel, all of which are alike poisonous and the symptoms are the same.

Kalmia angustifolia1NARROW-LEAF LAUREL—(Kalmia angustifolia—botanical name) Other names: Sheep laurel; lambkill; sheep poison; lamb laurel; dwarf sheep laurel; small laurel; low laurel; dwarf laurel; Nicky. This plant is the same as the preceding, but smaller, only 2 to 4 feet high, with smaller, thinner, and narrower leaves, and smaller flowers, clustered, not at the extreme end of the stem, but at the ‘base of the flesh shoots. It is of general growth in east of the Mississippi river. Its poisonous qualities are similar to the broad-leaf laurel.

Rhododendron maximum1GREAT LAUREL—(Rhododendron maximum—botanical name) Other names: Laurel; rosebay; mountain laurel; rhododendron; American rosebay; big laurel; big-leaf laurel; horse laurel; deer tongue; cowplant; spoon hutch. A large evergreen bush or small tree, 10 to 20 or 30 feet high, with thick leaves, 4 to 10 inches long, and splendid clusters of large, odorless, pale pink, or nearly white flowers, blossoming in July. A commonly cultivated ornamental tree, native to the Allegheny mountains, but extending northward in isolated patches to Connecticut and New Hampshire. Its poisonous qualities are the same as those of the whole laurel family.

Pieris mariana1STAGGERBUSH—(Pieris mariana—botanical name) Other name: Kill lamb. A weak-limbed shrub, 2 to 4 feet high, with thick, highly veined leaves and showy clusters of tubular white flowers. It is frequent in low, damp soils near the sea coast from Connecticut to Florida, and poisonous to man and animals.

Leucothoe catesbaei1BRANCH IVY—(Leucothoe catesbaei— botanical name) Other names: Hemlock; calf kill; leucothoe; dog laurel. An evergreen shrub, 2 to 4 feet high, with thick, tapering, sharply saw-edged leaves and numerous clusters of small, white, tubular, ill-smelling flowers, which appear in April or May. Found in dense thickets along stream banks and elsewhere-in the Allegheny Mountains from West Virginia to Northern Georgia.

Datura stramonium1JIMSON WEED— (Datura stramonium —botanical name) Other names: Jamestown weed; common stramonium; thorn apple; apple of Peru; devil’s apple: mad apple; stinkwort; stinkweed; Jamestown lily; white man’s plant.

The jimson weeds are rank, ill-smelling plants, with large, funnel-shaped flowers and prickly four-valved seed pods. They were introduced into the United States from Europe and tropical America, one variety of which, growing from 5 to 10 feet high in California and a perennial, is known as the “flora punda.” The United States species is a stout, smooth, bushy annual, 2 to 5 feet high, with a coarse green stem, large, flaccid (limber) leaves, and white, heavy-scented flowers 2 to 4 inches long. The flowers appear from May to September, and the fruit ripens from August to November. The seeds are numerous and about the size of a grain of buckwheat. The smell of all parts of the plant is nauseating. There is a purple-stemmed jimson weed, common in the south and west, but its characteristics are the same as all the other varieties. .

The poison is a stimulant and its excessive use is dangerous. Children sometimes are fatally poisoned by eating the seeds. Cattle also have been poisoned by eating the leaves of young plants which were present in grass hay. The symptoms of the poisoning are: Headache, vertigo, nausea, extreme thirst, dry, burning skin and general nervous confusion, with loss of sight and of voluntary motion; sometimes mania, convulsions and death. Inhaling or breathing the fumes from the burning dried leaves is often practiced to find relief from an attack of asthma.

Solanum nigrum1BLACK NIGHTSHADE—(Solanum nigrum—botanical name) Other names: Common nightshade; nightshade; deadly nightshade; garden nightshade. A smooth annual, 1 to 2 feet high, with rough, angular, widely branching stems; oval leaves, 2 to 4 inches long, with wavy margins or edges; drooping clusters of small white flowers, and black, globose, juicy berries, which ripen from July to October. It flourishes everywhere.

The poisonous properties of this plant depend upon the conditions of growth. It is not always poisonous, though fatal cases have been noted in the case of calves, sheep, goats, and swine. Those plants which have a pronounced musky odor are considered poisonous.

The symptoms are: Stupefaction, staggering, loss of speech, feeling and consciousness; cramps and sometimes convulsions. The berries are considered poisonous.

It ripens from July to October and November. It flourishes along brooks and ditches from Massachusetts to Ohio, and less common elsewhere. The berry is somewhat poisonous, and an extract of the leaves moderately so.

Helenium autumnale4SNEEZEWEED — (Helenium autumnale —botanical name) Other names: Sneezewort; sneezeweed; staggerweed; swamp sunflower; false sunflower. A smooth, angular, branching perennial, 1 to 3 feet high, with rather thick lance-shaped leaves, and a large number of showy yellow flowers, which do not appear until autumn. Common in moist ground everywhere in the United States.

The whole plant, especially the flower, is bitter and pungent. The powdered plant causes violent sneezing when inhaled and is used as a remedy to produce that effect. It is poisonous to sheep, cattle and horses, who develop a taste for it, and are killed by eating large quantities. In fatal cases death is preceded by spasms and convulsions.

The free market healthcare system we had before Obamacare was taking care of those who were sick. It was doing it the way the liberals contend they want it done, by spreading the wealth. The free market healthcare system paid for those that did not have insurance, when people went to the hospital and were unable to pay, as required by law they (the hospitals) have to treat people who come to the emergency room, regardless of ability to pay. The hospital and it’s medical associates would then charge each paying customer a little more, thereby spreading the cost among their many customers.

The democrats however, when they talk about these people going to the hospital and not paying, they then say “but, I don’t want to have to pay for your, or their, healthcare.” For the deniers out there, I have heard them say it too many times in the last year or so, for you to even try to deny it.

The liberal progressive democrats do not like this system as evidenced by Michelle Obama and the University of Chicago Medical Centers patient dumping scheme where they received a good deal of justly opprobrious press over its policy of “redirecting” low-income patients to community hospitals while reserving  its own beds for well-heeled patients requiring highly profitable procedures. Substantial coverage was given to a recent indictment of the program by the American College of Emergency Physicians. ACEP’s president, Dr. Nick Jouriles, released a statement suggesting that the initiative comes “dangerously close to ‘patient dumping,’ a practice made illegal by the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act, and reflected an effort to ‘cherry pick’ wealthy patients over poor.”

They want the government to impose even more egregious taxes on the middle class and the so-called wealthy. Those making more than 200k (according to democrats) who turn out to be small business owners, because the people who are really wealthy are like all enterprises including government, they are going to pass the costs onto someone else or protect what they have from being further encroached upon.

No, liberals say I don’t want to have to pay for that person going to the hospital, I want government to impose a tax system by which we can pick the winners and losers, where we can impose our idea of social justice on those evil people who don’t want to have to pay for other peoples healthcare insurance. Those who have gamed the system too long by lying to the American people, and have forced people to not be able to insure themselves.

It’s like the LA Times opinion piece where the liberal was all for the Obamacare law until they found out they were going to have to pay for it. I think the quote went something like “I was all for the law until I learned I was going to have to pay for it”. As we are finding out, and as was predicted by everyone on the right. The Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act does nothing to protect the patient as evidenced from the lack of security testing on the healthcare.gov website to people losing the healthcare insurance plans and doctors they were happy with by the millions. Nor is it affordable as the liberal in the LA Times story found out along with millions of others.

Obama said one of the most incredibly incompetent things I’ve heard from him in his last press conference on Nov. 14th. He said “What we’re also discovering is, that, insurance is complicated to buy.” How out of touch can you be? This is what you get with people who have never had to exist outside of academia and government. How could they not know insurance was complicated to buy? Every single one of the intellectual professors who authored Obamacare, that I’ve heard speak about it. It is obvious they should never have been given the task of designing a system they have never had any involvement with, outside of abstract studies. It is incredible and incredulous how out of touch they truly are with the reality of humanity.

The democrats started this debate by saying there were an estimated 30 million before the Obamacare law without insurance, then they went to 40 million, then to 50 million. Now they are saying there are not only 50 million without insurance, but that all 50 million of them are sick, implying they’ll have access to healthcare for the first times in their lives. What they have really done is narrow your choices, your choice of insurance coverage and your choice of doctors, hospitals, and medical services. All of this from the so-called party of choice, sure they want to give you choices, their choices, not your own.

The lies will never stop with progressives, because they have to lie to get their policies passed by the American people. They have also shown their true feelings for minorities, by their flippant dismissive attitudes toward the 5 million Americans who have already lost their insurance due to the regulations imposed by the Obamacare law.

Out of the 20-30 million Americans who did not have insurance to begin with, most of them were young and healthy who do not need large healthcare plans. I seriously doubt out of that 20-30 million we were first informed about, that even 5 million of them didn’t have insurance because they wanted or needed it and could not pay for it.

As I pointed out months ago, the Obamacare law was designed to make the people lose their insurance on the individual market and the employer markets because the Obamacare law needs the people who already pay for insurance to be kicked out of their plans and be forced into the Obamacare market. They could not depend on the people who are not already paying for medical insurance to suddenly run out and buy insurance just because of the Obamacare law. No, they needed at least those on the individual market to come into the Obamacare exchanges to get the ball rolling, and boosting the number of enrollees by 5 or 10 million in the first year would help convince the American people that the law was working. This fact is evidenced by the authors of the law themselves, as professor Ezekiel Emanuel admitted the fact, they needed those people to be forced into the exchanges.

I used to think democrats studied history to learn how to implement harmful policies of the past to hurt America, it’s not that, they’re not that smart. In fact they are so devoid of intelligence, they do not realize they just have the same spirit as other despotic reprobate peoples before them, it therefore causes them to use the same tactics and rhetoric.

They are also finally reporting something I told my family a few months ago. Not only can hackers get the information that you submit to the healthcare.gov website. Every computer system that healthcare.gov website is tied into is vulnerable because hackers can use the Obamacare website as a doorway into all the other systems, i.e. IRS, DHS, HHS, State computer systems, you name it.

Therefore every Americans information is vulnerable. For an identity thief this could not be better, they now have a way to make a complete profile on you, your assets, addresses, bank accounts, everything!

It is incomprehensible that a political party is so invested in a program that they would allow anywhere near this threat level to the American people and their information.

You keep hearing people say they need the young and healthy to buy into the exchanges to make Obamacare work. Why then does the law allow young adults to stay on their parents healthcare plans until they are 26 years of age? They were never counting on the young and healthy, they were depending on the millions and millions of people that have lost, are losing, or will be losing their current medical insurance plans to be kicked into the exchanges.

This was never about healthcare, this Obamacare law was simply about control. I do hope one of the consequences of this incredibly intrusive and abusive law is, that it will force out of business, those insurance companies who thought it was a good idea to join with government in this fascist manner because it forced with threat of penalty, the American people to buy those same insurers products, just as it is now forcing many small business people out of business and keeping others from growing the businesses they are able to keep. This would be the correct form of social justice!

See liberals, democrats or progressives are never really for, the things they say they are for, they consistently tell you the exact opposite of the truth. They have tried to destroy the best healthcare system in the world because they wanted to control the outcomes. The free market was doing a more efficient and cheaper job of spreading the wealth around with their policies, than the government will ever be able to do with theirs.

If the democrats and Obama anticipated the slow or low sign up for Obamacare, why would they now need to extend the 2014/15 sign up period from 45 days to 60 days and move the date of the beginning of the sign up period from 2 weeks before the election to 2 weeks after?

Democrat actions on Obamacare have proved beyond doubt; Liberals think it’s okay to force someone to do something that is good for them. Christian principles are good for people. Should people be forced to live by those principles, faith, prayer, church? No, and they should not be forced by government to do other things their conscience informs them is wrong, or that their hearts are against!

And no, I wasn’t serious in questioning  whether people should be forced to adopt christian principles, God, nor Jesus would approve of that. I am serious however, just as people should not be forced into religion, they certainly should not be forced into anything else!

RINOIf I heard correctly tonight, the stupid morons in the GOP leadership are doing it to us again;

Representative Trey Radel in the House, and Senator Marco Rubio in the Senate are introducing the Rubio / Radel bill to delay the individual mandate to sign up for Obamacare or ACA.

While the bill would delay the penalties for not signing up for Obamacare insurance. It would then, 6 months after the Obama administration gets the Healthcare.Gov website fixed, and the administration certifies that it is fixed.

The Radel / Rubio bill would then put the onus back on the American people, after the glitches are worked out. If they the American people, do not then sign up for Obamacare insurance, they have to prove they had issues or glitches with the internet, website, telephone number, etc.  involved in the sign up process. Thereby encouraging and insuring more people will go back to the website again to sign up, after their current bad experiences with it.

The GOP leadership is beyond stupid, if people do not sign up then the system will collapse on it’s own, and the people will have nullified a law they did not want in the first place.

As I have said many times, I will never underestimate the GOP and RNC’s ability to snatch defeat out of the jaws of sure victory.But then again, maybe the republicans (just like the democrats) and their corporate cronies (just like the democrats) also want Obamacare, or the Un-Affordable Healthcare Act.

We see during this partial government shutdown the main priority of the government under the administration of Obama is to harm the American people. Just imagine if even more of the economy & nation could be affected by Obama’s punitive measures against the American people during the shutdown.

There should be no doubt now in anyone’s minds with Obama’s closing memorials, ocean, national parks, etc., Denying our warrior’s family’s the death benefits promised by a grateful Nation? He had his National Park Service even hold people vacationing in Yellowstone at gun point, wouldn’t let them leave the hotel they were staying in to even go outside? Opens the Washington Mall for an illegal alien demonstration, yet blocks the Honor Flight WWII Vets from visiting the memorial built in their honor? Just to try to hurt US during this government shutdown? Let’s not forget he closed the White House to school children’s tours after he got the sequestration cuts that he and his admin came up with. The tours are still to this day closed, even after private individuals stepped forward to pay for the tours. There can be no doubt Barack Obama is trying to hurt U.S.!

There are times that come to Nations, when the petty divisions no longer matter. In these times it is imperative for men to choose what side they will be on, where there is no middle ground, where the contrast is so clearly defined that it becomes right versus wrong, and good versus evil.

I think we have come to such a time in this nation, where men must stand and be counted, or be counted on for nothing. If you are nothing, then nothing is where you will stand, and you will be nothing but swept aside when the counting is done.

The House of Representatives, are the closest to the American people because they are up for re-election every 2 years, instead of 6 like the Senate and 4 like the President. This  is also the reason the House of Representatives have the  Power of the Purse, because they are more accountable to the people and it is through the House of Reps that the people are supposed to be able to weld that power by defunding something the President is doing that the people disagree with.

This restriction in regard to the raising of money, is founded on the principle that the House of Representatives is strictly the representation of the people, and is intended to prevent undue appropriation of money, which might be made by a house less dependent on the people.

The house of representatives of the United States is the rightful purse holder of the nation; and when it shall lose this original and most important feature in its constitution, the public good must become a creature of party and passion. The public purse or power of appropriations: a power which, certainly, it was never intended to vest in any one man, though a president of the United States. It is a fundamental principle, in a free government, that the immediate representatives of the people should keep the purse strings, and should have the constant and supreme control of the public funds. The Constitution of the United States fully recognizes this important principle. The guardianship of the public purse is the most important privilege and sacred duty of the House.

It is clear, that the representatives of the people, having the sole right to assess taxes, must naturally possess the power of disposing of their proceeds. Along with TA, Barry popularized the concept of “roof hits”: when they were chooming in the car all the windows had to be rolled up so no smoke blew out and went to waste; when the pot was gone, they tilted their heads back and sucked in the last bit of smoke from the ceiling.

When you were with Barry and his pals, if you exhaled precious pakalolo (Hawaiian slang for marijuana, meaning “numbing tobacco”) instead of absorbing it fully into your lungs, you were assessed a penalty and your turn was skipped the next time the joint came around.  “Wasting good bud smoke was not tolerated,” explained one member of the Choom Gang, Tom Topolinski, the Chinese-looking kid with a Polish name who answered to Topo.
5. The Choomwagon

[Choom Gang member] Mark Bendix’s Volkswagen bus, also known as the Choomwagon. … The other members considered Mark Bendix the glue, he was funny, creative, and uninhibited, with a penchant for Marvel Comics.  He also had that VW bus and a house with a pool, a bong, and a Nerf basketball, all enticements for them to slip off midday for a few unauthorized hours of recreation…
6. Interceptions

Barry also had a knack for interceptions.  When a joint was making the rounds, he often elbowed his way in, out of turn, shouted “Intercepted!,” and took an extra hit.  No one seemed to mind.
7. Slippers

Choom Gang members often made their way to Aku Ponds at the end of Manoa Stream, where they slipped past the liliko’i vines and the KAPU (keep out) signs, waded into waist-high cool mountain water, stood near the rock where water rushed overhead, and held up a slipper (what flip-flops are called in Hawaii) to create an air pocket canopy.  It was a natural high, they said, stoned or not.
8. Ray The Dealer

He was a long-haired haole hippie who worked at the Mama Mia Pizza Parlor not far from Punahou and lived in a dilapidated bus in an abandoned warehouse. … According to Topolinski, Ray the dealer was “freakin’ scary.”  Many years later they learned that he had been killed with a ball-peen hammer by a scorned gay lover.  But at the time he was useful because of his ability to “score quality weed.”

In another section of the [senior] yearbook, students were given a block of space to express thanks and define their high school experience. … Nestled below [Obama’s] photographs was one odd line of gratitude: “Thanks Tut, Gramps, Choom Gang, and Ray for all the good times.” … A hippie drug-dealer made his acknowledgments; his own mother did not.
9. Pumping Stations

Their favorite hangout was a place they called Pumping Stations, a lush hideaway off an unmarked, roughly paved road partway up Mount Tantalus.  They parked single file on the grassy edge, turned up their stereos playing Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, and Stevie Wonder, lit up some “sweet-sticky Hawaiian buds” and washed it down with “green bottle beer” (the Choom Gang preferred Heineken, Becks, and St. Pauli Girl).
10. Veto
Description: 10.
One of the favorite words in their subculture revealed their democratic nature.  The word was veto.  Whenever an idea was broached, someone could hold up his hand in the V sign (a backward peace sign of that era) and indicate that the motion wash not approved.  They later shortened the process so that you could just shout “V” to get the point across.. In the Choom Gang, all V’s were created equal.
11. Maui Wowie, Kauai Electric, Puna Bud And Kona Gold:

In the Honolulu of Barry’s teenage years marijuana was flourishing up in the hills, out in the countryside, in covert greenhouses everywhere.  It was sold and smoked right there in front of your nose; Maui Wowie, Kauai Electric, Puna Bud, Kona Gold, and other local variations of pakololo were readily available.
12. The Barf Couch

The Barf Couch earned its name early in the first trimester when a freshman across the hall from Obama [in the Haines Hall Annex dorm at Occidental College] drank himself into a stupor and threw up all over himself and the couch.  In the manner of pallbearers hoisting a coffin, a line of Annexers lifted the tainted sofa with the freshman aboard and toted it out the back door and down four steps to the first concrete landing on the way to the parking lot.  A day later, the couch remained outside in the sun, resting on its side with cushions off (someone had hosed it clean), and soon it was back in the hallway nook.

(The main hallway at Haines Hall was called the Annex,) home to the impromptu Annex Olympics: long-jumping onto a pile of mattresses, wrestling in underwear, hacking golf balls down the hallway toward the open back door, boxing while drunk.  There were the non-Olympic sports of lighting farts and judging them by color, tipping over the Coke machine, breaking the glass fire extinguisher case, putting out cigarettes on the carpet, falling asleep on the carpet, flinging Frisbees at the ceiling-mounted alarm bell, tasting pizza boxes to the floor, and smoking pot from a three-foot crimson opaque bong, a two-man event involving the smoker and an accomplice standing ready to respond to the order “Hey, dude, light the bowl!

A TIME FOR CHOOSING (The Speech – October 27, 1964)

Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you and good evening. The sponsor has been identified, but unlike most television programs, the performer hasn’t been provided with a script. As a matter of fact, I have been permitted to choose my own words and discuss my own ideas regarding the choice that we face in the next few weeks.

I have spent most of my life as a Democrat. I recently have seen fit to follow another course. I believe that the issues confronting us cross party lines. Now, one side in this campaign has been telling us that the issues of this election are the maintenance of peace and prosperity. The line has been used, “We’ve never had it so good.”

But I have an uncomfortable feeling that this prosperity isn’t something on which we can base our hopes for the future. No nation in history has ever survived a tax burden that reached a third of its national income. Today, 37 cents out of every dollar earned in this country is the tax collector’s share, and yet our government continues to spend 17 million dollars a day more than the government takes in. We haven’t balanced our budget 28 out of the last 34 years. We’ve raised our debt limit three times in the last twelve months, and now our national debt is one and a half times bigger than all the combined debts of all the nations of the world. We have 15 billion dollars in gold in our treasury; we don’t own an ounce. Foreign dollar claims are 27.3 billion dollars. And we’ve just had announced that the dollar of 1939 will now purchase 45 cents in its total value.

As for the peace that we would preserve, I wonder who among us would like to approach the wife or mother whose husband or son has died in South Vietnam and ask them if they think this is a peace that should be maintained indefinitely. Do they mean peace, or do they mean we just want to be left in peace? There can be no real peace while one American is dying some place in the world for the rest of us. We’re at war with the most dangerous enemy that has ever faced mankind in his long climb from the swamp to the stars, and it’s been said if we lose that war, and in so doing lose this way of freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment that those who had the most to lose did the least to prevent its happening. Well I think it’s time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the Founding Fathers.

Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, “We don’t know how lucky we are.” And the Cuban stopped and said, “How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to.” And in that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here, there’s no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.

And this idea that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power except the sovereign people, is still the newest and the most unique idea in all the long history of man’s relation to man.

This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.

You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well I’d like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There’s only an up or down—[up] man’s old—old-aged dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

In this vote-harvesting time, they use terms like the “Great Society,” or as we were told a few days ago by the President, we must accept a greater government activity in the affairs of the people. But they’ve been a little more explicit in the past and among themselves; and all of the things I now will quote have appeared in print. These are not Republican accusations. For example, they have voices that say, “The cold war will end through our acceptance of a not undemocratic socialism.” Another voice says, “The profit motive has become outmoded. It must be replaced by the incentives of the welfare state.” Or, “Our traditional system of individual freedom is incapable of solving the complex problems of the 20th century.” Senator Fullbright has said at Stanford University that the Constitution is outmoded. He referred to the President as “our moral teacher and our leader,” and he says he is “hobbled in his task by the restrictions of power imposed on him by this antiquated document.” He must “be freed,” so that he “can do for us” what he knows “is best.” And Senator Clark of Pennsylvania, another articulate spokesman, defines liberalism as “meeting the material needs of the masses through the full power of centralized government.”

Well, I, for one, resent it when a representative of the people refers to you and me, the free men and women of this country, as “the masses.” This is a term we haven’t applied to ourselves in America. But beyond that, “the full power of centralized government”—this was the very thing the Founding Fathers sought to minimize. They knew that governments don’t control things. A government can’t control the economy without controlling people. And they know when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. They also knew, those Founding Fathers, that outside of its legitimate functions, government does nothing as well or as economically as the private sector of the economy.

Now, we have no better example of this than government’s involvement in the farm economy over the last 30 years. Since 1955, the cost of this program has nearly doubled. One-fourth of farming in America is responsible for 85 percent of the farm surplus. Three-fourths of farming is out on the free market and has known a 21 percent increase in the per capita consumption of all its produce. You see, that one-fourth of farming—that’s regulated and controlled by the federal government. In the last three years we’ve spent 43 dollars in the feed grain program for every dollar bushel of corn we don’t grow.

Senator Humphrey last week charged that Barry Goldwater, as President, would seek to eliminate farmers. He should do his homework a little better, because he’ll find out that we’ve had a decline of 5 million in the farm population under these government programs. He’ll also find that the Democratic administration has sought to get from Congress [an] extension of the farm program to include that three-fourths that is now free. He’ll find that they’ve also asked for the right to imprison farmers who wouldn’t keep books as prescribed by the federal government. The Secretary of Agriculture asked for the right to seize farms through condemnation and resell them to other individuals. And contained in that same program was a provision that would have allowed the federal government to remove 2 million farmers from the soil.

At the same time, there’s been an increase in the Department of Agriculture employees. There’s now one for every 30 farms in the United States, and still they can’t tell us how 66 shiploads of grain headed for Austria disappeared without a trace and Billie Sol Estes never left shore.

Every responsible farmer and farm organization has repeatedly asked the government to free the farm economy, but how—who are farmers to know what’s best for them? The wheat farmers voted against a wheat program. The government passed it anyway. Now the price of bread goes up; the price of wheat to the farmer goes down.

Meanwhile, back in the city, under urban renewal the assault on freedom carries on. Private property rights [are] so diluted that public interest is almost anything a few government planners decide it should be. In a program that takes from the needy and gives to the greedy, we see such spectacles as in Cleveland, Ohio, a million-and-a-half-dollar building completed only three years ago must be destroyed to make way for what government officials call a “more compatible use of the land.” The President tells us he’s now going to start building public housing units in the thousands, where heretofore we’ve only built them in the hundreds. But FHA [Federal Housing Authority] and the Veterans Administration tell us they have 120,000 housing units they’ve taken back through mortgage foreclosure. For three decades, we’ve sought to solve the problems of unemployment through government planning, and the more the plans fail, the more the planners plan. The latest is the Area Redevelopment Agency.

They’ve just declared Rice County, Kansas, a depressed area. Rice County, Kansas, has two hundred oil wells, and the 14,000 people there have over 30 million dollars on deposit in personal savings in their banks. And when the government tells you you’re depressed, lie down and be depressed.

We have so many people who can’t see a fat man standing beside a thin one without coming to the conclusion the fat man got that way by taking advantage of the thin one. So they’re going to solve all the problems of human misery through government and government planning. Well, now, if government planning and welfare had the answer—and they’ve had almost 30 years of it—shouldn’t we expect government to read the score to us once in a while? Shouldn’t they be telling us about the decline each year in the number of people needing help? The reduction in the need for public housing?

But the reverse is true. Each year the need grows greater; the program grows greater. We were told four years ago that 17 million people went to bed hungry each night. Well that was probably true. They were all on a diet. But now we’re told that 9.3 million families in this country are poverty-stricken on the basis of earning less than 3,000 dollars a year. Welfare spending [is] 10 times greater than in the dark depths of the Depression. We’re spending 45 billion dollars on welfare. Now do a little arithmetic, and you’ll find that if we divided the 45 billion dollars up equally among those 9 million poor families, we’d be able to give each family 4,600 dollars a year. And this added to their present income should eliminate poverty. Direct aid to the poor, however, is only running only about 600 dollars per family. It would seem that someplace there must be some overhead.

Now—so now we declare “war on poverty,” or “You, too, can be a Bobby Baker.” Now do they honestly expect us to believe that if we add 1 billion dollars to the 45 billion we’re spending, one more program to the 30-odd we have—and remember, this new program doesn’t replace any, it just duplicates existing programs—do they believe that poverty is suddenly going to disappear by magic? Well, in all fairness I should explain there is one part of the new program that isn’t duplicated. This is the youth feature. We’re now going to solve the dropout problem, juvenile delinquency, by reinstituting something like the old CCC camps [Civilian Conservation Corps], and we’re going to put our young people in these camps. But again we do some arithmetic, and we find that we’re going to spend each year just on room and board for each young person we help 4,700 dollars a year. We can send them to Harvard for 2,700! Course, don’t get me wrong. I’m not suggesting Harvard is the answer to juvenile delinquency.

But seriously, what are we doing to those we seek to help? Not too long ago, a judge called me here in Los Angeles. He told me of a young woman who’d come before him for a divorce. She had six children, was pregnant with her seventh. Under his questioning, she revealed her husband was a laborer earning 250 dollars a month. She wanted a divorce to get an 80 dollar raise. She’s eligible for 330 dollars a month in the Aid to Dependent Children Program. She got the idea from two women in her neighborhood who’d already done that very thing.

Yet anytime you and I question the schemes of the do-gooders, we’re denounced as being against their humanitarian goals. They say we’re always “against” things—we’re never “for” anything.

Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.

Now—we’re for a provision that destitution should not follow unemployment by reason of old age, and to that end we’ve accepted Social Security as a step toward meeting the problem.

But we’re against those entrusted with this program when they practice deception regarding its fiscal shortcomings, when they charge that any criticism of the program means that we want to end payments to those people who depend on them for a livelihood. They’ve called it “insurance” to us in a hundred million pieces of literature. But then they appeared before the Supreme Court and they testified it was a welfare program. They only use the term “insurance” to sell it to the people. And they said Social Security dues are a tax for the general use of the government, and the government has used that tax. There is no fund, because Robert Byers, the actuarial head, appeared before a congressional committee and admitted that Social Security as of this moment is 298 billion dollars in the hole. But he said there should be no cause for worry because as long as they have the power to tax, they could always take away from the people whatever they needed to bail them out of trouble. And they’re doing just that.

A young man, 21 years of age, working at an average salary—his Social Security contribution would, in the open market, buy him an insurance policy that would guarantee 220 dollars a month at age 65. The government promises 127. He could live it up until he’s 31 and then take out a policy that would pay more than Social Security. Now are we so lacking in business sense that we can’t put this program on a sound basis, so that people who do require those payments will find they can get them when they’re due—that the cupboard isn’t bare?

Barry Goldwater thinks we can.

At the same time, can’t we introduce voluntary features that would permit a citizen who can do better on his own to be excused upon presentation of evidence that he had made provision for the non-earning years? Should we not allow a widow with children to work, and not lose the benefits supposedly paid for by her deceased husband? Shouldn’t you and I be allowed to declare who our beneficiaries will be under this program, which we cannot do? I think we’re for telling our senior citizens that no one in this country should be denied medical care because of a lack of funds. But I think we’re against forcing all citizens, regardless of need, into a compulsory government program, especially when we have such examples, as was announced last week, when France admitted that their Medicare program is now bankrupt. They’ve come to the end of the road.

In addition, was Barry Goldwater so irresponsible when he suggested that our government give up its program of deliberate, planned inflation, so that when you do get your Social Security pension, a dollar will buy a dollar’s worth, and not 45 cents worth?

I think we’re for an international organization, where the nations of the world can seek peace. But I think we’re against subordinating American interests to an organization that has become so structurally unsound that today you can muster a two-thirds vote on the floor of the General Assembly among nations that represent less than 10 percent of the world’s population. I think we’re against the hypocrisy of assailing our allies because here and there they cling to a colony, while we engage in a conspiracy of silence and never open our mouths about the millions of people enslaved in the Soviet colonies in the satellite nations.

I think we’re for aiding our allies by sharing of our material blessings with those nations which share in our fundamental beliefs, but we’re against doling out money government to government, creating bureaucracy, if not socialism, all over the world. We set out to help 19 countries. We’re helping 107. We’ve spent 146 billion dollars. With that money, we bought a 2 million dollar yacht for Haile Selassie. We bought dress suits for Greek undertakers, extra wives for Kenya[n] government officials. We bought a thousand TV sets for a place where they have no electricity. In the last six years, 52 nations have bought 7 billion dollars worth of our gold, and all 52 are receiving foreign aid from this country.

No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. So governments’ programs, once launched, never disappear.

Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth.

Federal employees—federal employees number two and a half million; and federal, state, and local, one out of six of the nation’s work force employed by government. These proliferating bureaus with their thousands of regulations have cost us many of our constitutional safeguards. How many of us realize that today federal agents can invade a man’s property without a warrant? They can impose a fine without a formal hearing, let alone a trial by jury? And they can seize and sell his property at auction to enforce the payment of that fine. In Chico County, Arkansas, James Wier over-planted his rice allotment. The government obtained a 17,000 dollar judgment. And a U.S. marshal sold his 960-acre farm at auction. The government said it was necessary as a warning to others to make the system work.

Last February 19th at the University of Minnesota, Norman Thomas, six-times candidate for President on the Socialist Party ticket, said, “If Barry Goldwater became President, he would stop the advance of socialism in the United States.” I think that’s exactly what he will do.

But as a former Democrat, I can tell you Norman Thomas isn’t the only man who has drawn this parallel to socialism with the present administration, because back in 1936, Mr. Democrat himself, Al Smith, the great American, came before the American people and charged that the leadership of his Party was taking the Party of Jefferson, Jackson, and Cleveland down the road under the banners of Marx, Lenin, and Stalin. And he walked away from his Party, and he never returned til the day he died—because to this day, the leadership of that Party has been taking that Party, that honorable Party, down the road in the image of the labor Socialist Party of England.

Now it doesn’t require expropriation or confiscation of private property or business to impose socialism on a people. What does it mean whether you hold the deed to the—or the title to your business or property if the government holds the power of life and death over that business or property? And such machinery already exists. The government can find some charge to bring against any concern it chooses to prosecute. Every businessman has his own tale of harassment. Somewhere a perversion has taken place. Our natural, unalienable rights are now considered to be a dispensation of government, and freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp as it is at this moment.

Our Democratic opponents seem unwilling to debate these issues. They want to make you and I believe that this is a contest between two men—that we’re to choose just between two personalities.

Well what of this man that they would destroy—and in destroying, they would destroy that which he represents, the ideas that you and I hold dear? Is he the brash and shallow and trigger-happy man they say he is? Well I’ve been privileged to know him “when.” I knew him long before he ever dreamed of trying for high office, and I can tell you personally I’ve never known a man in my life I believed so incapable of doing a dishonest or dishonorable thing.

This is a man who, in his own business before he entered politics, instituted a profit-sharing plan before unions had ever thought of it. He put in health and medical insurance for all his employees. He took 50 percent of the profits before taxes and set up a retirement program, a pension plan for all his employees. He sent monthly checks for life to an employee who was ill and couldn’t work. He provides nursing care for the children of mothers who work in the stores. When Mexico was ravaged by the floods in the Rio Grande, he climbed in his airplane and flew medicine and supplies down there.

An ex-GI told me how he met him. It was the week before Christmas during the Korean War, and he was at the Los Angeles airport trying to get a ride home to Arizona for Christmas. And he said that [there were] a lot of servicemen there and no seats available on the planes. And then a voice came over the loudspeaker and said, “Any men in uniform wanting a ride to Arizona, go to runway such-and-such,” and they went down there, and there was a fellow named Barry Goldwater sitting in his plane. Every day in those weeks before Christmas, all day long, he’d load up the plane, fly it to Arizona, fly them to their homes, fly back over to get another load.

During the hectic split-second timing of a campaign, this is a man who took time out to sit beside an old friend who was dying of cancer. His campaign managers were understandably impatient, but he said, “There aren’t many left who care what happens to her. I’d like her to know I care.” This is a man who said to his 19-year-old son, “There is no foundation like the rock of honesty and fairness, and when you begin to build your life on that rock, with the cement of the faith in God that you have, then you have a real start.” This is not a man who could carelessly send other people’s sons to war. And that is the issue of this campaign that makes all the other problems I’ve discussed academic, unless we realize we’re in a war that must be won.

Those who would trade our freedom for the soup kitchen of the welfare state have told us they have a utopian solution of peace without victory. They call their policy “accommodation.” And they say if we’ll only avoid any direct confrontation with the enemy, he’ll forget his evil ways and learn to love us. All who oppose them are indicted as warmongers. They say we offer simple answers to complex problems. Well, perhaps there is a simple answer—not an easy answer—but simple: If you and I have the courage to tell our elected officials that we want our national policy based on what we know in our hearts is morally right.

We cannot buy our security, our freedom from the threat of the bomb by committing an immorality so great as saying to a billion human beings now enslaved behind the Iron Curtain, “Give up your dreams of freedom because to save our own skins, we’re willing to make a deal with your slave masters.” Alexander Hamilton said, “A nation which can prefer disgrace to danger is prepared for a master, and deserves one.” Now let’s set the record straight. There’s no argument over the choice between peace and war, but there’s only one guaranteed way you can have peace—and you can have it in the next second—surrender.

Admittedly, there’s a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson of history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement, and this is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face—that their policy of accommodation is appeasement, and it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand—the ultimatum. And what then—when Nikita Khrushchev has told his people he knows what our answer will be? He has told them that we’re retreating under the pressure of the Cold War, and someday when the time comes to deliver the final ultimatum, our surrender will be voluntary, because by that time we will have been weakened from within spiritually, morally, and economically. He believes this because from our side he’s heard voices pleading for “peace at any price” or “better Red than dead,” or as one commentator put it, he’d rather “live on his knees than die on his feet.” And therein lies the road to war, because those voices don’t speak for the rest of us.

You and I know and do not believe that life is so dear and peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery. If nothing in life is worth dying for, when did this begin—just in the face of this enemy? Or should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in slavery under the pharaohs? Should Christ have refused the cross? Should the patriots at Concord Bridge have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the shot heard ’round the world? The martyrs of history were not fools, and our honored dead who gave their lives to stop the advance of the Nazis didn’t die in vain. Where, then, is the road to peace? Well it’s a simple answer after all.

You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, “There is a price we will not pay.” “There is a point beyond which they must not advance.” And this—this is the meaning in the phrase of Barry Goldwater’s “peace through strength.” Winston Churchill said, “The destiny of man is not measured by material computations. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we’re spirits—not animals.” And he said, “There’s something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty.”

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.

We’ll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.

We will keep in mind and remember that Barry Goldwater has faith in us. He has faith that you and I have the ability and the dignity and the right to make our own decisions and determine our own destiny.

Since January of 2009, President Obama and Congressional Democrats have enacted into law gross tax increases totaling more than $670 billion, or more than $2,100 for every man, woman and child in the United States. The list of tax increases includes at least 14 violations of the President’s pledge not to raise taxes on Americans earning less than $200,000 for singles and $250,000 for married couples.
